Seasonal flu jab - who needs it and when to book in Bristol

Flu is more than a bad cold. The vaccine takes about ten days to reach full effect, so October and November are the sensible months to book - whether you qualify on the NHS or come to us privately.

Seasonal flu jab - who needs it and when to book in Bristol
Health · Cadbury Heath, Bristol

Flu has a way of being underestimated until it lands. A proper dose is days of fever, aching limbs and a cough that lingers for weeks. For older adults, pregnant women, young children and anyone with a long-term condition, it can be a great deal more serious than that.

Who qualifies for a free NHS jab

  • Adults aged 65 and over
  • Pregnant women, at any stage
  • Anyone with a long-term health condition - asthma, diabetes, heart, kidney or liver disease
  • Carers and household contacts of people whose immune system is suppressed
  • Frontline health and social care workers

If you do not qualify

Plenty of people fall just outside the NHS criteria - the teacher in a classroom of thirty, the new grandparent, the partner of someone vulnerable. We offer a private flu vaccine from £16. The vaccine itself is the same quality you would get on the NHS - the only difference is who pays for it.

What to expect at the appointment

It is quick. A short health check, a discreet jab in the upper arm, and you are out in under ten minutes. Most people feel completely fine afterwards - a slightly sore arm for a day or two is the most common side effect. Drive home, get on with your day.

Walk in, call ahead, or book online. We will not turn anyone away because they are not sure if they qualify - tell us your situation and we will work out the right route together.
